Mask Off the Repair. Masking tape placed on both sides of the gap prevents the wood filler from being applied where you don’t want it.

Sand the Filler Smooth. After the wood filler has dried, you can remove the masking tape and sand the filler flush with the surface of the wood.

Finished Repair. After sanding, the wood filler blends into the surrounding area. Once the project is stained and finished, the repair will be all but invisible.
